Planning my route was probably one of the more challenging things for preperation of my trip. Priceless in my attempt to do so was the book Peddaler's Paradise by Nigel Rushton. I aquired these bookes through Pete and Ed Books in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States.
Pedaler's Paradise books proved heaps more useful than the Lonely Planet guide book, because they gave complete road information including road profiles instead of highlights and small routes/trips. For quick trips the Lonely Planet book would be helpful, but the Pedaler's Paradise book is essential if doing a true tour of New Zealand. All in all Pedaler's Paradise books are superior, not to mention smaller and lighter.
Below is a map of my route (Blue was negotiated by bicycle, yellow was motorized transport). I hope to add more detailed infomration, but doubt I'll ever make the time.
